The Faculty of Pharmacy -University of Kufa held a symposium “MicroRNA Therapeutics”.
It aims to introduce the importance of this type of therapy in treating intractable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and autoimmune diseases.
It included the type of nucleic acid, which are small RNA molecules no longer than 22 nucleotides in length, their mechanism of action in regulating gene expression of other genes, and their role in biological processes such as metabolism, division, differentiation, and development.
It classifies microRNA drugs into two types: mimics and inhibitors or antagonists.
It concluded by discussing examples of synthetic microRNAs, such as miR34a, which is used to treat melanoma when applied to cancer cell lines and is considered a tumour suppressor gene, these therapies are still in the clinical trial stage.
