The Faculty of Engineering -University of Kufa held a workshop on diabetes and its complications, aiming to shed light on the nature of the disease, its types, and its health impacts.
It included a lecture on the physiological aspects of diabetes, which is characterized as a glucose metabolism disorder that leads to elevated blood glucose levels due to impaired insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells.
The disease is classified into Type 1 diabetes, caused by an autoimmune disorder that destroys beta cells, typically affecting individuals aged 4–35 years, and Type 2 diabetes, which arises from insufficient insulin secretion or insulin resistance and primarily targets those over 40 years of age.
Its recommendations emphasized the importance of adhering to medical guidelines, maintaining a healthy diet, and practicing regular physical activity. It warned against neglecting treatment, as it may lead to severe complications affecting the kidneys, eyes, nerves, blood vessels, and heart.
